CHAPTER SIX
Blake tried to think of something besides the pain in his hand as the x-ray technician positioned his fingers on the cold metal plate. It had been almost three weeks since the accident. Shouldn't they be healed by now?
Once the torture was over, the technician sent him back to the waiting room.
Nick put down the magazine he was reading and looked at Blake. "Well?"
Blake dropped into the chair beside Nick. "Well what?"
"What did they say?"
"Nothing. I have to wait to see the doctor." Blake hated waiting just about more than anything elseâother than being helpless. Mandy had moved in to take care of him, and she had to help him get dressed in the morning because he couldn't button his shirt or jeans, or even pull his own boots on and off. Tommy had stuck him on desk duty, fielding calls and writing up reports, because he couldn't risk Blake not being able to do his job one-handed. Even Cooper had stuck him in the office at the Triple S.
"You couldn't tell anything from her expression?" Nick stretched his legs out in front of him, crossing one booted foot over the other.
"Nope. And she wouldn't say a word."
Nick's eyebrows rose. "Don't tell me you're losing the famous Kaufman charm? I guess settling down will do that to you."
Blake snickered. "Yeah, you should know all about that."
"Ouch." Nick placed a hand over his heart. "I'm wounded. So what's the worst that can happen if you don't get that cast off today?"
"I tried on my jacket for the tailor yesterday and couldn't even get my hand through the sleeve. They'll have to split it, and I'm going to look like the broke cowpoke my father thinks I am. I hate giving him another chance to believe he's right, even if he isn't."
"Look, Blake, you need to get past this thing with your father. Think about it. Your father is probably in debt up to his ears, while you not only have that prize money, but you have two jobs and three pieces of property now, thanks to Jake, that will soon be producing oil and gas royalties." Nick leaned forward and held Blake's gaze. "So who's the better man here?"
"Doesn't matter. So long as he thinks he's the successful one, nothing I say will change his mind. And you know what? It no longer matters. I know who I am and what I have, and if he never understands me, it's his loss. Right now, I have everything I want. A beautiful bride, great friends, and not just one, but two jobs I love. And he can't take any one of those away from me."
As he spoke, Blake realized he meant every word. It didn't matter anymore. His friends wouldn't care if he showed up at the wedding with a jacket with a split sleeve. Mandy might wish things were different, but she'd deal with it. His mother would understand.
So who cared what his father thought?
